KATIE MARRIES JOHN
City Beach caught up with newlyweds to ask them a few questions about their special day.
How did you both meet?
10 years ago…. I briefly dated one of Jonny’s friends and from that we became friends. We would often see each other out and about and we were always the only ones on the dance floor doing hideous dancing… the chicken dance… the worm… sardine in a can (haha). One day my friends said to me “what is with you and Jonny” and his friends said to him “what is with you and Katie?” They put the idea in our heads and here we are years later!
How did he pop the question?
I surprised him with a holiday to Thailand and he surprised me by proposing when we were there! He had planned to propose on Phi Phi island (where the Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed) I love Leo, however, our tour just passed by there that day. So, instead we were enjoying some champagne, watching a magical sunset when I found the ring! It was perfect!
What type of wedding did you plan, what was your theme?
Fun, relaxed, beachy, boho and most of all a celebration of us!
Which quirky features made your wedding unique?
We had lots of ‘us’ features which made our wedding unique and us! Starting with my dress, doing the order of the day different with Jonny seeing me first and photos before the ceremony, the life size cut out of us welcoming our guest to the wedding, our peacock chairs at the reception and the light up DANCE letters on the dance floor!
Where did you hold the ceremony?
We held the ceremony on Flagstaff Hill. Jonny’s parents use to go up there on dates when they first got together 47 years ago. We choose there because obviously it’s a gorgeous backdrop but, also so our guest and us could simply walk over to City Beach for our reception.
Why did you choose City Beach?
What’s not to love about City Beach? You walk in and are wowed by the rooms, then you see THE VIEW, then you meet the staff like Hannah and then… you eat the food! Couldn’t fault them. Not only we were blown away, our guest were too!
What was the most memorable moment from the day?
Katie: Our ceremony. The whole moment of arriving to leaving! We had a celebrant who made everyone laugh and cry and laugh and cry again. It was so us! And… I got to marry my best friend! (Also me braking my toe… at our reception… doing the worm.. in my wedding dress! I couldn’t forget that. I am still limping!)
Jonny: When we first got to the ceremony. Everyone was excited and I just kept thinking.. I’m about to marry my best friend and the love of my life! Also when we first got to the reception with all our family and friends.
What was it like dealing with Wedding Coordinator Hannah?
Easy, organised, flexible, a breeze! Hannah was AWESOME! She genuinely was interested with how we wanted to do it, loved listening to our ideas and excited to help us make our day us! There was no, we do this or you should do this it was how do you guys want it!! Which was refreshing from others we had met!
What’s your No.1 go to song that had to be included in your playlist?
Katie: Darryl Braithwaite, Horses, Love Shack J
Jonny: Run DMC, It’s like that
Any advice for couples about to tie the knot?
Book with a venue who knows what they are doing, book a photographer whose photos you love and let them do their thing!
Have fun. Stop during the day. Take it in. Remember that everyone is there for you guys and that is pretty awesome!
